NO SURPRISES.

THIRD DAY'S TENNIS. SENIOR SINGLES COMMENCE. POUKTWErS GOOD DISPLAY. There were no surprises yesterday in the first round of the men's and women's singles in the annual Auckland provincial lawn' tennis championships, which were continued on the Stanley Street courts. Two 'heavy showers In the morning stopped play for more than an hour, but the courts dried out quickly in the warmth til at followed. Several doubles matches were played in the afternoon. J). G. France, of Wellington, was compelled to withdraw from the men's singles championships owing to arm strain. Two other visitors, R. G. Pattinson. Canterbury, and Miss E. Pluininer. Hawke's Bay, both won their singles. Adjourned at 6-all in the fifth set owing to failing light on the previous evening, the doubles match between J. D. Bull and B. McL. Wallace and D. Anderson and H. X. Potter was continued yesterday, the final set being replaved with the approval of the referee, Mr. S. A. Clea!. Bull and Wallace won this .and took the match. There was another five-set contest in the men's doubles yesterday afternoon between the Waikato representatives K. Matuschka and L. Roach and E. D. Lusk and A. D. Mitchell, the latter pair winning. Women's Title-holders Win. Misses B. L. Bishop and P. Coojke. holders of the women's doubles titles, won in straight sets from Misses M. and R. Hodces. and the Beverlev sisters defeated Miss V. Brown and Mrs. R. S. Milne. Misses M. Maefarlane and R. Taylor proved too good for Misses J. Hansen and J. K. Ramsey. The Wellington partnership of Miss E. Pluim-mer and Mrs. ]). G. France went down before Misses B. Griffiths and J. St. George. One of the best exhibitions of the day was given by W. T. Pountney and the Waikato representative D. B. Livingstone, Pountney's victory confirming the opinion that he is one of the most promising young players in the Dominion. His play yesterday, following on hie recent annexation of the Wanganui and Manawatu singles titles in that order, marked his increasing improvement. The errors lie made were mostly bad judgment in following in on the WTong shot. Results were: — MEN'S SINGLES. First Round.—M. R. Andrews beat W. E. Butler. 2—«; 6—2, 2—6. 6 —4. 6—2 ; R. 11.
