WIN FOR GUNN.

TENNIS SINGLES. BEATS A. S. BURNS TO-DAY. CHAMPION GAMES CONTINUE. With the second round of the men's singles and the quarterfinals of the women's singles to be decided, the annual Auckland provincial lawn tennis championships entered on their fourth day of contests on the Stanley Street courts shortly before 1.30 o'clock this afternoon in fine, sunny weather, with a slight breeze. Fating each other on the courts for the decisions in the men's singles when play commenced were: J. T. Mayson, v. J. C. Charters; X. F. Bedford, v. L. Woach (Waikato); J. W. Gunn, v. A. S. Burns, Xew Zealand junior title champion; W. T. Pountney, v. J. Roach (Waikato);' and M. R. Andrews, v. R. H. Lewis. The interest in to-day's important contests was shown by the increased number of spectators. Burns Goes Down. J. W. Gunn had his work cut out with A. S. Burns, the junior title champion, though he took the first set 6 —o before Burns fcund himself. In the second set Burns played magnificent tennis to begin and did not seem to be able to miss the returns. The set went to 5 —2 in Burns favour, but bad judgment through hitting the net at crucial stages gave Gunn the next three games to equalise and the following two to take the set at 7—5. At this stage Burns, though keeping Gunn travelling all over the court with a diversity of shots, seemed to have lost his touch in the art of clearing the net. The third set saw Gunn, who was playing steady tennis now and who did not seem to be extending himself, carry the set and match at 6 —o, 7—5, 6 —l. Burns should have avoided attacking. Mayson On Top. J. T\ Mayson's complete accuracy and cunning placement were too much for J. Charters in the first two sets of their game. Mayson won the first without much trouble (5 —3) and went on to win the second (9 —7). His complete confidence was always apparent, and he continually passed Charters by yards. Towards the end of the second set Charters appeared to be tiring. He came up to the net, but again Mayson's masterywas apparent. Mayson rapidly won the first three games of the third set bv clever variation of length, which bafHed Charters. Maysons 3-0 lead in the third" set was squared at 3-3 by Charters, Mayson then pulling away to a 5-3 lead. Charters won the next game before Mavson succeeded with the game and the match. Bedford's Win Against Roach. In the first set of the match in which X. F. Bedford beat the Waikato player. L. ! Roach, there was hard fighting, Bedford being 2-5 down before climbing to win at 9-7. In the second set Bedford played faultlessly to win at 6-0. The third set saw Roach start well to take the first game. He then lost the second and gained the third. After that, however, Bedford produced some brilliant tennis, especially at the net. and took the next five games in a row to win with a magnificent smash. Lewis' service and smashing were features of his victory over M. R. Andrews, who played steadily and occasionally retrieved some nice passins shots. . 6 Pountney Outplays Roach. J. Roach, Waikato's number 1 ranking player,, who beat Orbell in the first round of the singles yesterday, was defeated by W. T. Pountney, holder of the Dannevirke, Wanganui and Manawatu singles titles. Pountney is number 1 player for the Campbell Park Club and beat X. G. Sturt, Auckland's Wilding Shield team captain, when his club played Remuera at the beginning of the season. Pountney played more consistent tennis in a five-set match to-day. the rallies in the first set bein~ particularly good. a Results were:— MEX'S SIXGLES. J. W. Gunn beat A. S.
