TOWN SECTION.

WINS THE TRIAL QUEEN LU SURPRISES. PAYS BIG DIVIDEND. FINE FINISH IN SPRINT. Although the favourite, Pocket Venus, finished out of a place in the Trial Handicap, with which the Thames Jockey Club's annual meeting was opened to-day, the result of the race could not' be described as surprising, as the second and third favourites finished first and second. The weather was fine, the attendance large and the track hard and fast. Town Section was quite popular with the betting public, and, despite the fact that she had drawn an outside position | at the barrier, she \yas soon in front. ( Winder then pulled her in behind Orally, Gamos and Cintrace until ttie turn for home was leached, where he sent her along to score convincingly by a length and a quarter. Orally was always in the picture and ran a sound race, while Gamos, in finishing third, registered his .best effort to date. When the barrier was released, Queen Spear dwelt, and Town Section was showing out early from Cintrace, Kotahi Acre and Gamos. Orally then rushed to the front and led across the top from Gamos, Cintrace, Town Section, Forlorn and Little Idea. There was no change in the order of the leaders at the straight entrance where Orally looked to be the likely winner. However, Town Section finished altogether too solidly for her over the last bit. Empire Action was fourth, just ahead of Cintrace, who was followed by Solitary, Kotahi Acre and Wild Acre. Two Surprises. The Maramarua Handicap Hurdles provided the crowd with both a thrill in running and a surprise victory at the end. First of all, Ngakaru, second favourite each way, who was bowling along six lengthy in front of the field when the hurdle immediately in front of the stand was reached, ran that fence down badly and then decided to jump the fence into the saddling paddock. He eleared that safely, and the race ceased to interest hiin. Stratliire fell at the same obstacle. Queen Lu was responsible for the surprise. She was not fancied to any material extent by speculators, but, after being a good way back iearly, she came on the scene a couple of furlongs from home and stayed on well to win nicely and return a dividend of over a score and a half. Airam was somewhat unlucky, as she was side on at barrierrise and lost half a dozen lengths, finally losing the race by only three-quarters of a length. Sinking Fund ran a very encouraging race and should soon be first past the judge. When Xgakaru fell, Calcutta was left in front of Chief Lap. Manawalie and Kittle. Queen Lu moved up fast going along the back and was with Airam. behind Calcutta near the straight entrance. Sinking Fund and Kittle were next, followed bv Chief Lap. In a good tussle up the straight. Queen Lu did best. Kittle was fourth, and then came Chief Lap, Calcutta and Gascyne. Results were:— TRIAL HANDICAP of £130. Six fiirionjis. 2—2—TOWN SECTION, b m, 4,vrs. bv Acre—Marble Town (Mr. F.
