"SHIPS THAT PASS . .
The Unlucky Thirteen. QX my first trip to Anzac I. went in the Almvick Castle, later torpedoed. When embarking on her .it Alexandria, I saw, alongside, another transport, .Royal Edward, Toronto. On Friday, August 13, 1015, in the Aegean Sea, I was down below writing a letter when I heard the cry "Submarine!" I grabbed mv lifebelt and started to make mv way on deck, up' the iron ladders which provided the means of passage 'tween decks. I had climbed about twenty feet when I met dozens of men rushing down to collect their belts. In the mad rush I was pushed, down . again, but escaped unhurt. Eventually reaching the deck, I saw the captain on the bridge and .everyone else" at "stations." In the distance, on her way to Davy Jones' locker, was a steamer—the Boyal Edward—while some 1200 troops that she carried floundered in the water. "Ships that.pass!" 6/2218, CHATHAM ISLANDS.
