PRISON SENTENCES.
INTOXICATED DRIVERS. RACE TRAFFIC COLLISION. (From Our Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday. "I do not think that in a case like this, when such eases are being regarded seriously, and when a man is leaving a race meeting in heavy traffic in such a condition, a lenient view should be taken," said Mr. A. M. Colliding, S.M., in the Upper Hutt Magistrate's Court to-day, when Deryck Spillcr, company manager, aged 28, pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in charge of a motor car at Heretatmga yesterday. • Constable F. <T. Williams said that at C p.m. yesterday accused was driving a motor car on the main road at Heretaunga toward Wellington when he came into collision with a stationary car. A traffic officer took him to Trentham, where he was examined by a doctor and certified to be unfit to drive a car. He was in an advanced stage of intoxication, although not drunk. Traffic at tlie time was heavy. Mr. J. O'Donovan, who appeared for the accused, said his client needed the car for business purposes, and asked for leniency. Accused was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour, and Ilia license was cancelled for 18 months.
SEQUEL TO PARTY,
(From Our Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, Friday. The celebration of a wedding party on December 30 had a sequel in the Dargaville Magistrate's Court, when Samuel Bradley, aged 25, was charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car. He pleaded not guilty. The magistrate, Mr. G. X. Morris, sentenced the accused to seven days' hard labour. His driver's license was cancelled for 12 months.
