THIRD RACE SAILED. AUCKLAND'S FIRST WIN. FOtm BOATS CA»8IZ& (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLIXGTOX, Thursday. The third race of the CcrrnWell Oiip contest was nailed this afternoon in a strong north-wester, the Auekand crew winning by ltn 33s from Otago, with Tautanga and Jianukau next. The other boats capsized. The heroes of the day were the Manukaii crew, J. Taylor and P. Howard. The pick-up launch. after bringing the Wangahlii clew in. had its propeller fouled by a rope and the Wellington, Pnrem.ita and Plimmerton crews were left sitting on their capsized boats. The first three l>oats to finish the course returned to the clubhouse, but Manukau ran down wind and picked up the Welling and Paremata crews. Manukau had a rousing reception on arriving at the clubhouse with its four passengers. The Plimmerton crew was brought in by a dinghv. The principal excitement in t'he race waa provided by the Plimmerton crew, whose boat was the first to feel the effects of the heavy sea. Its boat made a spectacular nose dive, the stein coming up in tile air and throwing the crew overboard. Within 30 seconds. Paremata and Wellington had also capsized and Otago lost its skipper overboard. l>ut he clambered back and continued the race. Wanganui provided another incident bv rapsiving off the clubhouse after a wild run with spinnaker drawing well.
