" MILK-0!"
MORNING RATTLE. PROTEST BY CITIZENS. NOISY HORSE VANS. Complaint was mad-* to the Auckland Milk Hoard to-day by an Kpsom re-si dent that the delivery of milk in the early hours of the morning hf horsedrawn vehicles djsturlied the sleep of residents. The writer consequently protested against "this olisolete iiK'lh..:! of delivering milk." which awakened him daily before 4.30 a.m. The chairman (Mr. T. Ooldstine) remarked tfiat it had been demonstrated that horse-drawn vehicles were cliea,>er to operate than were motor vehicles, and he took it that the council shonld support any method of delivery ti.at would keep/prices down. It mighi lie that the use of rubber-tyred vehicles and rubber shoes on the horses would remnvc the cause for complaint. A member remarked that it. was the rattling of the crates of bottles ns much as anything which made the delivery noisy, anil he did not ihink rubber t.vres would affect the position. "Perhaps Mr. Hosser could tell lis how residents slept through milk deliveries 40 years ago," suggested a memlier. en." replied Mr. Rosser. "fn those days the mud on the roads acted it* a silencer. Now you have bitumen and concrete roads, and you have to put up with the rattle." "Hundreds of people in the town have trams passing their doors all through the night and seem to sleep without trouble." remarked Mr. Andrews. After further consideration the council decided to write requesting the milk vendor to instruct hi* roundsmen *o make ,1k little noise as possible in theii early-morning deliveries.
