Hot Box For The Goldfields Cup?

THAMES ANNUAL MEETING. Racing at Parawai — Prospects Reviewed — Chances of Tooley Street. The Goldfields Cup meeting of the Thames Jockey Club will be opened to-morrow, and the Cup, for which there are now twelve prospective runners, will be the principal event. Large fields are engaged in most of the events, and, as the horses are of a better class than in former years, a good day's sport should be witnessed. Betting will be on the win and place system.

A LARGE FIELD. Twentv-five horses are eng.iged in the Trial Handicap. with which the meeting will he opened, and as a number . f tnein |K..->e>s little or no form the i»ue is very open. As a two-year-old la-A season l'ocket Venus «-is in the money on half a dozen occasions, and her latest track work suggests that she will he difficult to beat. Town Section has also been in the money previously, and slight improvement on the part of I'intraee would give him more than an outside chance. Another promising sort is Luleen, who is on the upgrade. whileOrient Dawn showed promise at Whaligarei by finishing third to Oriental Hay and Kenneth Robert. Empire Action and Orally have been galloping well at Avondale. and the latter should give .1 good account of himself. The favourites are likely to be

PO< KKT VENUS ORALLY ORIKNT DAWN. CHANCE FOR AIRAM. Tlic field engaged in the Mara maru Hurdles is not over strong, and Airam, who won in this department on the Taranaki circuit and finished second on three other occasions, is likely to have a good following. Mungacre was successful on this course last year, but lias no recent form, and Calcutta appeals more, for lie was a good winner last season. Gascyne and Queen Lu have both been in the money recently and are possibilities. The easy brush fences will suit Sinking Fund and Sir Tommy, both of whom have plenty of pace, and Sinking Fund's turn is about due. Ngakaru, Chief Lap and Strathire are others who are not without prospects, but the bulk of the money should come for AIRAM SINKING FUND CALCUTTA. THE OPEN SPRINT. Llangollen (9.6). in pride of place in the Flying Handicap, is an unlikely starter. 'lav Seton has some good credentials. while Golden Sheila, on her recent hllerslie form, should be in a place. Tooley Street lias been working well

j and holds bright prospects. Tosh, Gali- ! lee and Moil Acre have been in (lie money recently and will be suited by the turning Parawai course. Rulette. Tepoto and Yalimeen have plenty of pace and are capable of putting up a pood showing under their lislit weights. However, there is little doubt that" the favoured horses will be TOOLEY STREET GOLDEN SHEILA GAY SETOX. BEST OF HACKS? Several good performers are included in the field for the Hack Cup, prominent among them being Eastern Heir, who won a similar event over nine furlongs at Stratford, and Master Appellant, winner over a mile at Ellerslie in November and a close third in the Waitemata Handicap at the Auckland summer meeting on December 28. Xuipapa was successful in the Hack Cup from a strong field at- Te Rapa last month, but he has failed since then. Another who lias shown to advantage over this distance is Raceline, and Long Span was successful over a mile at the last Pakuranga. meeting. Melvanui was placed at Ellerslie. and Royal Abb. a fit horse, should show up in this class. British Banner has won on this course, and a very likely lightweight is Bon Star. Speculators may prefer EASTERN HKIR MASTER APPELLANT MELYANUI. THE CHIEF EVENT. If capable of running out a mile and a quarter, the three-year-old Hot Box should run prominently in the Goldfields Cup. His latest track work indicates that he is at the top of liis form. Gav Rose has a number of defeats against her, but is capable of making t»ood showing here. The success of te Hai at Manawatu will ensure him support, and Miss Appellant, a winner over this distance at Ellerslie. has galloped well in the interim. Day Wind will not be troubled by the distance, and this al<o applies to Glen Abb and Black .Musk. The lightweights Prince Rangi. Kins Theo and High Tea have performed well up to a mile, but have to be taken on trust over ten furlongs. Chief selections may include HOT BOX TE HAI MISS APPELLANT.

I AMONG THE JUVENILES. The I'uriri Handicap, for two and three-year-olds, is run over live furlongs. and as a luge field is likelv race the starter post posilion« will plaV an important part in the -vent. Maxam is a brilliant beginner, as also is Sir Kobin. and this pair should give a good account of themselves. In winning at Taranaki recently Bronze Step drew attention to her prospects, while the two-year-old Pantheist would onlv need to reproduce her form of finishing second / to Tableau in the Musket Stakes at Kllerslie to l>e in the money. Valdene Kakarere, Sir Lysander. Miss Tidal and Foxtoon will add interest to the race. The form horses are MAXAM SIR ROBIN" PANTHEIST. THE BOROUGH HANDICAP. Several of those engaged in the Borough Handicap have earlier engagements. but if reserved for this race Prince Rnngi. (Jav Seton and Tosh would have to be considered. Keiia hag not raced since the spring, and -Jack Tar, who has been sprinting well, is to be preferred. Lornacre ran a couple of good races at Kllerslie and is sure to have plenty of friends. Tlie success of Dutch Girl at Taranaki is worth remembering, while Paso Robles is now near his best form. Oriental Bay, VeryGlad. Triune and Poland are the most likelv of the others. In the absence of Gay Seton investors may support JACK TAR LORNACRE PASO ROBLES. PROGRAMME ENDS. The Tapu Handicap, which is the final event on the opening day of the meeting, has drawn seventeen acceptors, some of whom have recent winning efforts to their credit. Pirate King may find his weight troublesome, and Spearford, a winner at his last two starts, should hold him safe. "Torch and Romani are useful sorts, and Valdene, despite her failure at Ellerslie. is capable of taking part in the finish. Silver Eagle has won over this distance, while Kenneth Robert scored at Ellerslie in November. Ohmaha ha« nothing of late to his credit, but has been working well at headquarters. Cloneen won this race last year, but has failed repeatedly since. Betting is sure to be brisk, and it would not surprise if the favourites were
