CHRISTMAS DEMAND

WESTFIELD MARKET. BEEF PRICES FIRM. IMPROVEMENT IN CALVES. Butchers seeking supplies to meet the Christmas demand bid keenly for fat stock at the special Westfield sale today. A feature of the yarding was the lieavj- entry ot' lainl)s, the biggest seen on the market this season. An average offering of beef was sold during the morning and met a ready demand at fully last week's rates. There were a number of choice quality steers, wliii-h sold at up to 40/ per 1001b. After last week's slump in calf prices the market made a sharp recovery today, owing to the smaller number coming forward. Choice vealers and runners improved as much as 10/ a head, but plainer sorts were only slightly higher than last week. The top price for steers, £14 7/6, was realised for the first of two lots, including one of 15 from Mr. F. C'. Bull, Mangere. A line of 10 sold on account of (j. Booth, Manurewa, made from £12 '2/6 to £14 2,6, and nine from Mr. F. Vosper, Hinuera, brought £11 to £14.
