CHRISTMAS POPULARITY.

ISSUE OF LICENSES,

The popularity of the Christmas and New Year periods for the holding of weddings is reflected in a measure by the marriage notices issued last month by the Registrar of Births. Deaths and Marriages at Auckland. Licenses issued hold good for three months, and it, was revealed to-day that quite a number of those contemplating marriage during the holiday season had already procured their licenses.

During November 302 marriage notices were issued, as compared with 255 in the corresponding month last year. For the 11 months of the present year notices number 2784, an increase of 264 on the figure for the January-November period in 1937. Of -the marriages 50 were performed bv the registrar last month, and so far this year he has officiated for 586 couples. The figures for 1937 were 44 and 531 respectively.

1 Births for the month and year also show an increase. LasJ month there were 270 births, as against 249 in November, 1937. To date this year there have been 2694 births, as compared with 2482 for the 11 months of last year.

At the other end of the scale the returns show that there have been more deaths this year than last. In the month just past deaths totalled 218, 21 more than in November last year. For the January-November period this year tliev aggregate 2264, as against the 1937 figure of 2058.
