Round About Ellerslie

THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS

Among the two-year-olds seen out at the recent Ellerslie meeting, High Caste impressed most and is a likely one to develop into a Derby colt. He is particuwell developed, and his performance in winning the Cambria Handicap was very impressive, as he had only had one start previously and was meeting a more sea'aoned one in Orelio. Konneta, who won on the second day, led all the way. and also accounted for Orelio. This pair is likely to meet in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and they should take a lot of beating. Foxmond, who performed weft at Te Rapifc running second on the first day HDd wiiming on the concluding day, was only produced on Monday. She did not get away well, but put in great work down the straight to finish third. She is one of

the Hist of the hoxhi'idjreH to race, and is u good advertisement for her sire. King Dazzle, by King Lu from Miss Dazzle, by

Illumination, was started on Monday, anil he showed enough speed to surest lie will be useful when he has had a little more experience. Miss Dazzle, when trained by the late Mr. J. Thorpe, won two hunters' steeplechases at Ellerslie. BHOULD PAY HIS WAY. Lexden, a_ four-year-old gelding by Resinous from Kainiiro. showed plenty of speed in the Melrose Maiden at Ellerslie on Saturday. He was always in the picture and held on to get third. Kainiiro is by Tea Tray from Rebekah, by Bezonian from Snowstell, by Clanranald from Safeguard, and thifs traces back to the Mermaid family. Rebekah was a good racehorse in her day and is the dam of High Finance, Midian and Rachel; all of whom were winners. Rebekah is a halt-sister 16 Cold Steel and Fleeting, th^ 1 latter being the dam of that good-horse Inflation. Resinous, the sire of Lexden. is by Limond from Amyrin, and therefore a half-brother to Bathos, .Grotesque,-Melissa and Perception. Lexden is trained by R. Johnson »t Xew Plymouth, and he -should pay his way this season. WELL-BRED YEARLINGS.

yearling filly by Iliad from Queen March and a colt of the same age by SoliC l'°n-n , era ' f rom Gay Marigold arrived at Ellerslie from the South Island a. few days ago. They have been sent out to a fam at Takamni, and will remain there until the time arrives ior them to be prepared for racing.

NOVICE SHOWS PROMISE

Among the novices seen out at Ellerslie during the week-end one that impressed was Hackenschmidt, a three-year-old gelding by The Ace from Precision, bv Quiii Abbey from Precise. He showed up in the running in the Melrose Maiden 011 Saturday and was fifth when the post was reached. This was his first race, and lie will be improved as the result of that appearance. Hackenschmidt is a stable companion of Shy. TO RACE IN MELBOURNE. IVoviding all goes well in the interim, Konneta. for whom !#)oogs was refused bv her owner Mr. Max Steinberg, a few day's ago, will be taken to Melbourne for the autumn meeting of the Victoria Rating V-. ' "isappments include the Sires' Produce Stakes of £3.500, seven furlongs; the Ascotvale Stakes of £1.500. six fur.e tlwi' and • t , he TT E - Manifold Stakes of i 1000, one mile. Her stablemate. Wapaugh. by Siegfried from Polonaise, will probablv be taken across at the same time. SHOULD PAY HIS WAY. Although Sir Lysander failed to gain a place *in the Rakino Handicap at Ellerslie last Monday, he put up a creditable showing. He began well and was close to the leaders at the home turn, and when he has had more experience should be capable of paying his way. BACK FROM A SPELL. The aged gelding Adsum, who has been spelling since last April, has been recommissioned. He looks nice and fresh as the result of the holiday, but at present is onlv doing light exercise on the lead. When Adsum finished racing last season he'was tired, and if the operation has the desired etfect he should be capable of winning more races over the big fences, for he has few superiors as a jumper. RAN UP TO FORM. Dauber, who is trained by A. Tinker at Takanini. ran two good races at the Auckland meeting, the son of Romney being third in each of his outings, only being beaten by a very narrow margin on the first day, while on Monday he was less than a length and a half behind the winner. Dauber has had five starts for two wtps and two minor placing®, and he should show to better advantage before the season is much further advanced.
