BRITISH RAILWAYS' HOPES. LONDON. British railroads apparently feel they are out of the epidemic of accidents which plagued them for more than a year, and rail schedules all through the country are being speeded up. A streamlined Pacific locomotive set a new British record for steam trains with a test run on July 3. covering three miles at 120 miles an hour and touching 12.i miles an hour for 300 yards. The earlier record was 114 miles an hour. The Coronation express between London and Edinburgh is the Briti-h Empire's fastest train, with an average of ti.->.37 miles an hour for 302 miles. On the 188-mile stretch from London to York it averages 71.0 miles an hour. Another London-Edinburgh train is said to make the world's longest nonstop run. 302J miles. latest time tables show 112 trains with scheduled average speeds of better than a mile a minute, and British railwaymen say more main line expresses leave London stations every day than any other city in the world. I Many railwaymen believe they are not out of the woods yet as far a? accidents are concerned, however, and say cuts in personnel have raised the danger factor.
