TO MR. C. T. MAJOR.

MASGNS ATTEND SERVICE. 'REALLY GREAT HEADMASTER' Tributes to the greatness and brilliance of the late Mr. C. T. Major were paid at a memorial service held in St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, last night, and attended by a large number of Freemasons of Auckland lodges, whose presence marked the respect and affection they felt for a former District Grani Master. Xo regalia, was worn. Dean W. Fancourt, District Grand Chaplain, conducted the service, which was also attended by several ministers who are Freemasons. •An opening sentence was read by the Rev. A. J. Greenwood, Past District Grand Chaplain, and Archdeacon W. J. Simkin, a brother of the Order, later led prayers. Mr. D. G. Patterson, Deputy District Grand Master, read the lesson. In his address, Dean Fancourt said Charles Major was a great man. "But as he was living among us and constantly with us, perhaps we have never realised the fullness of the greatness which belonged to him." As a brilliant scholar, continued Dean Fancourt, Mr. Major had thrown himself into the scholastic profession with all his heart and soul. He had risen fairly rapidly in that profession, and then became what few members of the profession ever achieved—a really great headmaster. He had founded his private and professional life upon God and trust. He also had a wonderful knowledge of boy nature and character. As a headmaster he had equally the gift of business acumen and superb organising and adimmstrative ability. In everything he undertook he was indefatigable and did not spare himself to further the cause He championed. 1 had also been a real Mason.
