Crippled Children Enrolled As Scouts

The widespread activities of the boy scout movement have been providing between fifteen and twenty boys with interest, education and amusement at the Wilson Home, Takapuna, in a quiet and unassuming way for P a '' year. These crippled children have been enrolled in the movement under a special section and trained to P&>* special tests within their capacities. When the Wilson Home was opened the movement realised it could extend its field of work to include the crippled children. The organisation allows for the passing of special tests substituted for the usual ones, in cases where scouts suffer from a physical handicap, the only provision being that the tests must not be r * J. ower standard and must call for an equal amount °f effort. those set must also receive the approval of some educational authority. Work has been going on quietly at file Wilson .Home for the past twelve months under the guidance of an enthusiastic veteran

of the movement, Mr. G. A. Goodwin, assisted by the boys of the Devonport and Takapuna troops. The Wilson Home lads, most of whom are so young that *hey are in the cubs, have the opportunity to see what is done by their older scout comrades. They show great interest in the intricacies of rope splicing and knot tying, and they are entertained by the presentation of K.im games and playlets. The particular phase of scout work in which the Wilson Home boys are trained deals principally with observation tests and there is great competition for excellence. One of the older lads is so enthusiastic that he almost invariably secures a 100 per cent score. And there is the comradeship felt at the attendance of the boya from the North Shore troops who mingle with their young pupils, only too anxious to impart the secrets of scout craft and bring happiness to those who suffer from physical disabilities.
