IMPRESSIVE EFFORTS.

PETITE JEWEL-BEDFORD.

TRAINING AT EPSOM.

It was not the fact that Bedford and Petite Jewel paced half a mile on a somewhat dead track in 1.7 that impressed most at Alexandra Park this morning; it was the manner in which they accom* plished their task. Both horses simply relished in their work, and were anxiouc to go faster, but were under restraint by , their drivers. These two pacers are engaged at the Waikato on Saturday, and 6hould give a good account of "themselves. The straight-out trotter, Great Sonoma, was also responsible for an attractive exhibition, which, however, he marred by one break. He lost a lot of ground through this, but once he settled down, displayed rare speed and quickly overhauled the pacers he was exercising with. He put the hall-mark on his exhibition by running the last half mile in 1.8. Others to record 1.8 over a similar distance were Kewpie's Queen and Kewpie's Crest. fcarly workers were Xoble Prince (J. McKendrick), Bismuth (J. McGarry), and Fernbrook Lass (L. Laver). They went together over a mile and a half on the cinders in 3.30.

Vanora (J. Mahoney), who had the hopples on for the first time since he last raced, was going well within himself, and under a strong pull, in leading Shining Link (L. J. Mahoney) past the mile and a quarter pole in 3.6. Shining Link took two seconds longer to cover the die* tance. Vanora Is carrying more condi* tion now, and shonld soon be at his best again.

t ,*£* Surprise (Ti. -Laverl ied Autumn Lm (G. Stubbs) over the first half of a mile and a ha]f workout in 1.11. They were eased over the next half, taking 1.18, and came home over the last half mile in 1.14, finishing on terms. Great Sonoma (C. Morrison) went oft from the mile a D d a half pole two seconds ahead ofKewpies Queen (W. Gee\ Grand Oame (K Bell) and Kewpie's Crest <J. Gee) with Bedford (Herring and Petite ; Tew . el (W. H. Andrews) another second behind. Kewpie's Qucon and Grand Dame quickly ran to the front and. after they had gone six furlongs, were just ahead of Bedford and Petite Jewel. Great Sonoma, who broke badly at this stage, falling to the rear. They passed the mile post in £. i ! Wp i Q " een bein £ J'wt a shade in tront of Kewpie's Crest, with Petite Jewel and Bedford half a 'length away, Hetite Jewel forced his way tbrotitrh over the next few furlones and beat Bedford home by a neck in 3.29 for the mile and a half. The last half mile took 1.7. Great Sonoma, who finished very solidly, was with Kewpie s Queen, about a ' lenpth behind the two leaders, both havinjt run their last half mile i n 1.8. Grand Dame petered out over the final stages, and will ITS £ 0 a lot hettpv to have a chance at Hamilton on Saturday Others to do useful tasks were: Fnuiwork: Sweet Aloes, on the lead: Ladv Triumph (D.
