ON THE GREENS.

Rinks for Dominion Tourney,

EXPEDITING THE CLUB COMPETITIONS. ROTORUA POPULARITY. PREPARATION FOR N.Z. TOURNEY. A fine afternoon on Saturday enabled bowlcra tf> get on with their own club competitions. Devonport tried a novel expedient. There were 20 entries, so they reuei ved fie whole afternoon for playing the first two rounds on the usual two-life ri.vstcm. automatic draw. Of course, this wcupiwl 10 of the 16 rinks, but by the time the 10 necessary markers were pulled out there was room for nearly all the others to play in tlKir ordinary fours. Auckland and Onehunpra have solved the difficulty by adopting the Carl ton system of dividing the competitors into afternoon and evening players, amalgamating the two sections after about four or five rounds. It dhows how difficult it is to get games finished wlicu it in mentioned that one Labour Day tournament, hold five wceke ago, wan only finished at Onehunga on .Saturday. A slack afternoon had been given to disposing of visiting rinks in the semi-finals, and the final of fifteen ends reunited: L. Jonets, H. R. Mackenzie, J. I). Whitmore, T. S. Baesctt 19, v. XV. P. Booth, Dr. J. Kirkwood, A. Farncll, J. R. Collin 17. The winners etarted with mix, to which Collin replied with four, and heavy scoring ruled throughout, until ■ they started the last end level at 17 all. Bassett held a few counters when the mkipe went to the mat, and Collin'e drives could not remove all of them. Rotorua Tournament Full. The draw was published on Saturday, and there was again disappointment for about 100 players shut out, these probably including the Wellington and Taranaki visitors, who usually make the gathering more interesting. It is very surprising to learn that there ie a proposal to apply to the Tourist Department for another green, to accommodate another sixteen to twenty teams, for a ttimilar proposal was made exactly 20 years ago. Eventually the club accepted my contention that even the three greene were not always kept in good order, that four would probably make the position worse, that already it was difficult to accommodate the 220 players and 200 to 300 ladies, and that an extra green would not take up the exceas of entries. The only solution was a second tournament, to double the number of players without over-crowding the boarding accommodation, and without any more trreon expense. This was done, and tor \'j years there has been a second tournament, changed to pairs since 1931. A third tournament is the only effective solution now. The club applied for a permit for one last year, to suit the surplus entries, but the Dunedin executive of the New Zealand Bowling Council turned down the application. Official Visit Tβ Kaipara. The executive of the Auckland Centre paid their annual vinit to the two Kaipara flubs during the week-end. The four member* of the council executive, Mr. F. i\- Houking. president of the association! Mr. .S. Coldicutt, treasurer, and Messrs w •/. fniscott and A. E. Whitten, councillors, epent the afternoon at Helensville getting an early start in their game, in the hope of meeting the others at Kaukapakapa before the latter had finished play. Aβ it happened their game came to an abrupt end, earlier than intended, tor a deluge of rain caused a rush to the paviliou. However, the greenkeoper took off hi* shoes and socks, waded in. and retrieved their bowls, eo they set off for Kaukapakapa. travelling in a cloud of dust after the first mile or two. The hearty reception fully made up for the wetting and the duetine, and all four had to respond to the official greeting. At both place* there we.ro anxious inquiries regarding Mr. G. L. Gladding, secretary nt the centre and of the association, who had accompanied every previous visiting party to the district, and good -wishes for the early recovery of his health wore expressed. The party entertained eome of the Helensville officials at Parakai during the evening, and they returned to the c-itv next day.

The Canterbury howlers resident in Auckland have challenged the Otago bowlere to a six-rink (ramp on December 16, tho date being chosen as the anniver- «•"■»' of the foundation of C'hristchurch in \XiO. Intending participants are invited to write or telephone to tho r-onvener, Mr. J. E. Green.

Several more teams have been arranged for tho Dominion tournament, for which the entries close on Friday.
