OBITUARY.

MR. JABEZ MARKS. IN EIGHTY-FIRST YEAR. PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN. Unwell for some months, Mr. Jabez William James Marks, chairman of directors of the Auckland Meat Company, Limited, died this morning at his home in Mount Eden, in his eighty-first year. Four months ago Mr. Marks took a etroke, and never completely recovered. He was one of the city's well-known businessmen.

He left his home in Somerset, England, 62 years ago, arriving in Wellington in the ship Hurunui. He took a position with the Gear Meat Company, Wellington, but later came to Auckland, where lie ivas employed by the late Enoch Wood, a butcher in Symonds Street. Some time afte- that, he set up in business on his own account and by 1906 he had established several butchers' shops.

In that year, however, he amalgamated his business with the Auckland Meat Company, and he became one of the two managing directors. He held that position until 1912, when he resigned to take over the position of chairman of directors of the company. He was also foundation president of the Auckland Master Butchers' Association, which was formed about 1906. He remained president for some years after that date. He was keenly interested in farming, and for some years conducted a farm in the Waikato as a eideline.

Mr. Marks leaves a wife, three sons and five daughters. The daughters a»-e Miss F. Marks, Mesdamee A. W. Gregory, of Te Awamutu, W. S. Burns, R. S. Magill and C. W. Swales, all of Auckland. MR. J. E. MAKGILL

CITY BUSINESS MAN.

A prominent Auckland business man, Mr. John Edward Makgill, died suddenly last night at hie home, 30, Wapiti Avenue. Hβ was 64 years of age. Mr. Makgill was apparently in good health yesterday when he was in the city. Mr. Makgill was a son of Sir John and Nancy Makgill and was born in Edinburgh in 1874. He arrived in Auckland when he was seven years of age and attended the Auckland Grammar School and St. John's College. After leaving school he began farming on hie father's property in the Waiuku district. Later he bought sheep and cattle properties in the Matamata areas.

Mr. Makgill served on various" local bodies and was a former vice-president of the Auckland Provincial Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. He was a member of the Dilworth Trust Board, and also served on the Rural Intermediate Credit Committee and the Small .Settlers' Committee, Auckland. Mr. Makgill was one of the original directors of the Farmers' Trading Company, and was also a director of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Limited, of which, for a time, he was chairman of directors.

He is survived by his wife, four* sons and four daughters.

MR. J. A. HOLMES.

The death has occurred at the age of 79 years of Mr. Joseph Arthur Holmes, of Disraeli Street, Epsom, who was a prominent worker in the Methodist Church. He was at one time superintendent of the Methodist East Street Mission, also a teacher at St. John's MethoSist Sunday school, Ponsonby, and Mount Eden Methodist Sunday school.

Mr. Holmes came from Ireland, and first settled in South Australia, where he wae married in 1886. In 1903 he came to New Zealand, and was a prominent builder in Auckland up to the time of his retirement 18 years ago. He was a keen horticulturist.

He is survived by his wife and three children, the latter being Messrs. Joseph A. Holmes and Oliver S. Holmes, both of Epsom, and Mrs. F. J. Owers, of Royal Terrace. Mount Albert. There are four grandchildren.
