going to Turin to attend a festival because of the uncertain international situation. The truth, according to this report, is that the visit was put off because 1 the secret police had obtained proof of the existence in the north of Italy of a widespread conspiracy in the branches of the Fascist party itself and directed against the person of the Duce. The plotters seem to have been animated by a feeling of disgust with the pro-Ger-man policy followed lately by the Italian Government in opposition to all that the Duce himself preached during and after the war. The police informed Count Ciano who j in his turn gave the information to the j , e Duce of the existence of the plot, y A purge is now going on in all branches of the Fascist party and a 1 number of secretaries have been re- ( 19 moved from their positions and many < ff members have been expelled.
