The Washington correspondent of the New ork "Herald-Tribune"' says that after a conference with Mr. James J. 1' alley, chairman of the Democratic Convention, Democrat leaders from 21
Ka stern and Southern States went away with the impression that Mr. Roosevelt's current choice for his successor at the White House is Mr. Harry Hopkins, head of the Works Progress Administration. They said he would be nominated "only over our dead bodies."
Objections to Mr. Hopkins are that lie is an out-and-out New Dealer, who is supposed to have aroused the enmity of many types of business men, anil alienated the farmers due to difficulties over farm labour, and made the middle classes distrustful, due to his identification with the concept of lavish spending.
