The Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting was opened at Makaraka to-day in fine weather and before a large attendance;' The track was hard and fast. The totalisntnr handled £4940, compared with £">r>.->4 on the first clay last year, a decrease of £614.

A good display of jumping, marred only by one error when she rapped the top rail of the last fence, was given by the second favourite Illinois, who won the hurdles almost from end to end. Following Seven Sean, Mahala and Small Ray to the fir«t hurdle. Illinois assumed the lead and had Thrasher well beaten at the turn. The favourite. Small Boy. and Miss Bine, were unfortunate in heing forced lievond the end of the first hurdle by Seven Seas attempting to run off. the pair pulling up. Seven Seas finished strongly.

'Hie moderately fancied Mendelssohn scored an end to end victory in the ■function Hack Handicap, jumping to the front in the first half furlong and staying there. Quaint. .Tavola and True, in that order, followed the leader to the distance, where Quaint faded out. True, with a good r.in on the outside, got up to take second money, a length and a quarter lieliind the winner. .Tavola was a length further liack.

Oolden Blonde set the beet time. 1.13 3-."», for years on the course in the sprint. Lying fourth to the half mile Oolden Blonde cracked on the pace to lead into the straight, and in the run home she won goinar away by a length and a half. The little fancied Pakanui went a good race. Winj one of the leaders for two-thirds of the distance. Huntette. who led to the straight, was half a length away. The favourite. Joviality, second at the half mile, finished last.

Having won tln> sprint with f! old on Blonde. Mr. E. Fitzjrerald completed the double liV taking the l>ijj event, the Maknraka Handicap, with the favourite. l")e Friend. Skyway hit the front early, showing the wnv over the first five furlonjr* to Cav Hunter, De Friend and Pennycomequick in close order. Entering the hend Penny comcq nick rushed up alongside Skyway, hnt lost the advantage Ity swinging wide at the turn. Coming through on the rails a furlong from th* post T)e Friend won comfortably from Skyway, who tried hard to stall off the winner's challenge, flay Hunter was three-quarters of a length away, and Pennveotneqiiick four length* hack.

Mimicry, ami Hunting Royal, made all the play to the straight in the acurry, but once in line Native Song, who wan always lying handy, cut down the leader* to win by a length from the favourite. Malmetic threw hi* rider at the start, and did not .take part in the race. Native Song represented Mr. Fitzgerald's third successive win. Gay Laura was always in the firing line in the Roselaml Hack, shooting out from the start with Head Shepherd ami Illinois, who were practically on term* with the leader at the half mile. Inside the distance Birkology challenged, l>iit Gay Laura 'and Tllinoln had plenty ,in reserve, the former winning I>y a ! length. Hunting Royal wm a length and a half away, with Queen's Dream fourth. A surprise was sprnng by the little fancied Okawa in the October Hack. The leaders at the half mile were Sunny Lass and Guiding Light, followed by Gay Mimic. Perfect Lady and Okawa.
