PEACE DESIRED.
THE GERMAN PUBLIC.
OPINION OF VISITOR.
"WAR HAT BE AVERTED."
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
j Despite the gravity of international affairs, it is the firm opinion of Dr. O. Ziegler, a German visitor who arrived by the Wanganella this morning, that war may yet be averted in Europe. Dr. Ziegler, whose home is at Frankfurt, said he felt convinced that German public opinion is so wholeheartedly against war that it will prevent ultimate recourse to armed force. '"Xo one in Germany wants to go to war," he said. "We have so much in common with you British that we cannot make war against you. I have travelled through many countries during the past few months, and everywhere I have pone the feeling has been the same. War is so terrible that everyone wants to avoid it." Dr. Ziegler added that it was unfair to represent Herr Hitler as war-minded. The German leader was very anxious to find a peaceful way out of his present difficulties. Dr. Ziegler said it was five months since he left Germany, and while he was unable to say anything about present conditions there, he could say very definitely that the German people as a nation were extremely anxious to preserve peace.
