Premier Speaks
SEE PROMISES KEPT
(Received 8 p.m.)
LONDON, this day. ... . Mr ' CUmbwldn. in a statement in the early morninff, said: I have read th. epeech of Harr Hitler. 1 appreciate hi" refermeet to my efforts to tare peace. I cannot abandon those efforts, slnee it seams to ma incredible that the peoples of Europe, who do not want war with one another, should be plunged into a bloody struggle over a question on which agreement has already been largely obtained. "It is evident that the Chancellor has no faith that promises made will be carried out. These promises were not made to the German Government direct, but to the British and French Governments in the first instance. Speaking for the British Government, we regard ourselves as morally responsible for seeing that the promises are carried out fairly and fully. "We are prepared to undertake that they shall be carried out with reasonable promptitude, provided the German Government agrees to a settlement by discussion, not force.
I trust the Chancellor will not reject this proposal, which Is made in the same spirit of friendliness as that in which I was received in Germany, and which, if it is accepted, will satisfy the t» , fman J t M . for .*•. union of th# Sudeten Germans with the Helen without the shedding of blood in any part of Europe." The Inner Cabinet met at 10 p.m. to study the preliminary report of Herr Hitler's speech. The King held a Privy Council.
