WILL CO-OPERATE.
DEFENCE MEASURES.
"MUST LOOK TO OURSELVES."
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.
While New Zealand might strain her financial resources to meet the needs of social security, it was rather obvious to-day that the attitude was being encouraged of expecting more than was possible in the shape of assistance from Great Britain in maintaining New Zealand's national security in the event of war, said Mr. Hamilton.
After stating that he considered Mr. Chamberlain was making a real effort to prevent war. Mr. Hamilton added that the Dominion had received a strong hint that an emergency might arise, the nature of which would make it impossible for Britain to detach naval forces for overseas defence. "In plain language we must look more to ourselves." lie said. "Were we preparing adequately for the eventuality which -Mr. Chamberlain had clearly indicated?" he asked. It was the Government's duty to reviewits defence system in the light of the change in the strategical situation in recent years, and the National party would co-operate in that review, which would include every branch of the military forces.
