NEW AWARD.
NEW ZEALAND STONEMASONS. I DIFFICULTY OVER HOLIDAYS. ! The new award made by the Court of Ai biti at:oii for the Xow Zealand fexcspt Westlaiul) stonemasons, provides for a I'vo-diy week of 40 hours, and the following miniuiinn rates of wages for the difTerent classes of workers:—Stone-j masons, 2/10] per hour; head polishers, j ~/ J - polishers, 6avv-tcnders and crane- j drivers, 2/SA; and all other workers, 2/4.1 i The principal clauses referred to the' Court were those relating to the hours ' ot work, wages, holidays and general I conditions. The hours of work have been fixed as in the expired award, and I I in the rates of wages the classification I j agreed on by the parties in the expired J award have been followed. The question l ; of holidays was a matter of some diffi- I cultv, owing to the fart, that while the j majority of the workers covered by the i . award were probably employed in facI toi ies and would be entuled to condij tions prescribed by the Factories Act, numbers of workers were employed in places not subject to the Factories Act. i Payment for holiday was not gencrally granted to workers on hourly rates of wages who were not governed by the factories Act, but .n view of the fact that both c.asses of workers were, in many cases, employed by the same employer, and in some cases workers were employed partly in a factory and partly elsewhere, the Court found it impracticable to differentiate. Payment for holidays allowed by the Factories Act I had therefore been granted for all workers covered by the award. In other respects, including a clause relating to terrazzo workers, the award followed the recommendations of the Conciliation j Council.
