TWOPENNY PIECES.
On July 0, 1797, in response to a petition from the commons, a proclamation was issued giving currency to a new j coinage of copper money of penny and twopenny pieces. The twopenny pieces were to weigh 2ojs avoirdupois. The intrinsic value of the coins, workmanship included, was to correspond as nearly as possible with their nominal ▼aloe, bat no person should he obliged to take mora than a shilling's worth of such copper money in ray one payment. These twopenny pieces were the only copper ones ever minted in England. Silver twopenny pieces are still coined for distribution aa Maundy Money.
