POWERS OF ARREST.
FOR TRAFFIC INSPECTORS.
MOTOR UNION'S APPROVAL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRTSTCHURCH, Friday. A suggestion that powers of arrest be granted to traffic inspectors, provided they wero properly trained, wu approved by the South Island Motor Union at a conference to-day.
Commenting on the North Island Union's objection to power being given to inspectors to arrest intoxicated drivers, a delegate pointed out that the Government had only to make the inspectors special constables to give them powers of arrest. Inspectors had the power to forbid a motorist to drive and could remove his car to a police station.
Mr. A. Grayson said the North Island Motor Union had 110 sympathy with the drunken motorist, but wanted to preserve the liberty of the motoring public. The sober driver might be in danger of accusation by an unqualified inspector, as had happened at Auckland.
