£170.805 PROFIT LAST TEAR.

Tl>e Railway Department in the 20 weeks of the current railway year, ended August 20, has incurred a working loss of £6402, a* compared with a profit of £170,805 for the corresponding period of the previous year. In the year 193031 there was * working profit of £193,775.
For the first 16 weeks of the present year, ended -July 24, there was a working profit of £44,114, compared with £171,500 for the corresponding period of the year before, and £339,700 for the first 16 weeks of 1935-36.
The position at the end of 20 weeks in the past eight years is shown in the following table, which give* gross revenue and expenditure and the net result in each instance:—

Lom of ground to the extent of £49,912 id also shown by railway working in the four weeks ended August 20, compared with the corresponding period i>f last year. The accounts for the period, record a working l»s of £50,007, compared with a loss of £095 last year. The gross revenue for the period wae £016,320, which was £19,592. more than lust year, and expenses I increased by £09,504 to £666,927. The operating accoimt for the North Nlu nd lines shows a revenue of £319,532. an increase of £520<r, .and expense* totalling £350,717, an increase of C3.->,OIB. There was a loss of £37,185, compared with a loas of £7433. The receipts of the South Island railways were £207,382, compared with £210,390, a decrease of £3008. Expenses were £238.965, an inciease of C 10.378. Ther-j wa3 loss of £31,583, com pared with a I.>SB of £12 199 la*t v.'ur. The "jalanci of miscellaneous revenue wr« £18,161, a« against £13,937 in '037. The gross revenue wa«* £89,406 and expenditure totalled £71,245.
