UMBRELLAS, 2D EACH.
From bem? a pre-war music liall joke, tlio Southern Railway in England lias now earned the reputation for being particularly go-ahead. It certainly led the way to other companies in the matter of electrification, and it lias nowintroduced an innovation—true, of a minor if interesting kind—which the other? may follow. Reconciling itself to the erratic climate of Britain, it lias arranged that, at a considerable number of its stations, umbrellas may be hired at a penny a day. In the case of reason ticket holders no deposit is required; others must leave lialf-a-crown, to be reclaimed when the umbrella is returned. Thus, optimists who leave home on a snnnv morning with no protection from the weather may get home comparatively drily if—as it is probable—it is raining when they return.
