SWIMMING SEASON.

OTAHUHU CLUB "DIVES OFF/' THE CASE FOR A NEW FOOL. DR. T. H. PETTIT'S STATEMENT. At the annual meeting of the Otahuhu Swimming Club 80 persons were present, including residents from as far south as Drury. The chair was occupied by Mr. F. W. Grey, who welcomed Dr. Harold Pestit, president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. Hurry Johnston, Parnell Club delegate, and Mrs. E. Johnston, Auckland chaperoue.

'Hie report disclosed that the club had had a most successful season, the membership exceeding the hundred mark, with a largs percentage of promising juniors.

One Dominion and four Auckland titles were won by club members, Kathleen Grey winning the Auckland 100 yards and 220 yards intermediate girls' championships lor the second successive season and tile women's 100 yards title lor the second time. This member also won the national 220 yards intermediate girls' title at Nelson and created two new New Zealand records for tlie furlong and broke the 75 yards New Zealand record for git's. In addition to these successes she won the 110 yards Empire Games trials at Auckland.

Betty Owen, a Weymouth girl, won the junior girls Auckland backstroke title. Dr. Pettit, who is a member of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation, presented a large number of club trophies and made special reference to the success of Miss Grey, and urged all junior members to take their sport seriously. He gave a most interesting address on the proposed activities of the National Council and stated that from a survey made of gwimmlng facilities throughout New Zealand, the need of an up-to-date pool in Otahuhu with its big school children population, together with surrounding districts, was greater than in any other part of the Dominion. He gave an outline on the assistance which could be expected from his council and urged early activity in the building of a swimming pool.

During the evening the question of the recently-formed Drury Club linking up with Otahuhu was discussed and it is quite possible that a strong South Suburban Club, embracing as far 6outh as Papakura, will be the outcome.

The secretary of Hellabys Sports Club, Mr. L. Podmore, was presented -srith. -the Passenger Transport Cup for the Otahuhu works relay championship, and he is to assist by forming a branch of the club at Hellaby'e works.
