THE NATIVE PIGEON.

PREVENTING DESTRUCTION. P.W.D. MEN" AS RANGERS. Increased measures have been adopted by the Government to prevent illegal shooting of native pigeons. The appointment of a number of officers of the Public Works Department as rangers is reported to have had the effect desired.

A correspondent writing to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated, "... all should applaud the effort made to prevent the destruction of the beautiful native pigeon which is a true roamer of our bush. I know that in my part of the country since vigorous operations to protect the bird were renewed there are no longer feathers of wild pigeons lying about where I used to see them. The native pigeon, for its remarkable beauty alone, all should try and keep in the bush; it is one of the finest of the 6pecies of New Zealand birds."

Mr. Parry said yesterday that his colleague the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, had, through strict instructions given to men engaged on the various works to protect the pigeon and other native birds, rendered great help in the administration of the law.
