OVER 140,000 ELECTORS.
LAST-MINUTE RUSH YESTERDAY.
More tlian 000 Auckland electors participated yesterday in a last-minute rush t<> make rfure tliat their names were recorded on the rolls for the general election. This is t lie estimated mi ill lie r of people who streamed all day long into tlie office of the registrar, Mr. J. H. V. Carr, in High Street, but it does not take into account the many applications which were received through the post. When the supplementary rolls closed at six in the evening it wax estimated that the number of electors entitled to vote in the nine Auckland constituencies would be well over 140,000, as against 125,»8« in 1!*:?."., when an extensive purging of the rolls was carried out.
1 he main rolls closed this year with a total of 119.00" names, and it is estimated that the total number of applications fur inclusion in the supplementary lists has been about .'{4.000. This latter figure, however, is not the effective additional total. When the cleansing of the rolls is carried out within the next few days it is likely that the correction of duplications anil transfers will reduce present number of names for the supplementary roll bv at least cine-quarter
