GASWORKS PLANS.
HAMILTON. PROPOSALS.
DECISIONS OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent. > HAMILTOX. Wednesday. The increasing demands f'.r gas in Hamilton and other factors which were causing the capacity of the municipal gasworks to be outstripped and were giving rise to faults in the service, have been the subject of a report to the Hamilton Borough Council by Messrs. J. Lowe and CI. B. Collins, gas engineers, of Auckland.
One report, dealing with gas manufacture, was received by the council this evening. A second report, dealing with street mains and reticulation, is to be considered later. Messrs. Lowe and Collins made 17 recommendations, four of which involved little or no expenditure, and the remainder involved the expenditure of £1475 immediately, £16.200 next year, and £28.950 from 1&40 to 1943, a total of £46,625.
The gas engineer, Mr. J. H. Rishworth, was instructed to put in hand the work required to be done immediately, the expense to be 'borne by the revenue account. With respect to the major work recommended, the town clerk. Mr. W. L. Waddel, was instructed to obtain a report respecting finance from the council's bankers and the Treasury.
The work entails the installation of a retort house governor, increasing the lift of one holder, and the building of a bed of eight horizontal retorts. An additional gas holder, an evaporative condenser, and a machine for washing gas are recommended. Vertical chamber ovens, coal store extensions, purifier boxes, a station meter, a steam boiler, a waste heat boiler and a tar still are also included in the requirements recommended.
