PENALTY ON RETAILERS.
(To the Editor.)
The sales tax wae intended tojbe added to the selling price of goods. This Tβ impossible with small sake, and all articles selling at fixed prices, so this tax has to be paid by retailers. They, with their families, totalling in all ten* of* thousands, are being daily impoverished by this Government. It i< cipiivalcnt to an income tax of 4/ in the £. becaiise the 1/ sales tax means 20 per cent of net profits. It is fair enough for the sak-s tax to be added to the price of motor cars. radios, etc., but the sad position of the small retailer who is taxed 1/ for every 20/ worth of good* he huys to sell is a factor that will materially assist in retiring thie Government, with its" broken promises, to oblivion on election day. RETAILER.
