STATE EXAMINATION.

AUCKLAND HOSPITAL CEREMONY.

The annual presentation of medals to the muses who have passed the State examinations was held in the social rno, ns of the Xurses" Home last evenin". I here was a large attendance at this tunction and the guests included parents and relatives of the successful nurses, doc-tors and their wives and nu'inbere of the Auckland Hospital Hoard.

In addition to the medals, hospital certificates were presented to those nurses who had completed their training, and the sports trophies were also piH'wnted to the various winners for the year.

Mr. Allan J. Moody, the president of the Auckland Hospital Board, presided at the meeting and congratulated the successful nurses, 20 out of 29 of whom had passed the State examination. "A nurse trained in the Auckland Hospital can gain recognition in any part of the world," said Mr. Moody in addressing the nurses, "and it behoves you therefore to see that the Auckland Hospital keeps its name." The policy of the prosent board was to get to work and see that the nurses obtained a proper home in the near future, continued Mr. Moody. The board, he said, was very alive to its responsibilities in this direction. Another matter which had occupied the attention of the board, Mr. Moody continued, was the obtaining of a filtration plant for the swimming bath. Plans for the plant had alreadv been approved of by the Health 'Department, but the tenders had yet to be called.

A tribute was paid "by Mr. Moody to the three tutor sisters, particularly Sister Henderson, and to the ward sisters and to the medical men, all of whom had been of invaluable assistance to the nursee who sat for their examination. He also spoke of the great personal interest taken in the nurses bv the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Craven, and the lady superintendent, Miss E. M. Nuteey.

Other speakers during the evening were Dr. Kenneth MaoOormick, chairman of the honorary staff, Dr. .J. Hardie Neil and Archdeacon E. Cowie. Songs were sung by Nurse S. Clark anj recitations were given by Nurse L. M. Hendry. Items wore also given by the nurses' choir.

The gold medal, which was won by Nurse Joan Davison, was presented to her by Mrs. Moody, und the silver medal, won by Nuree Zoe Saunderß, was presented by Mrs. J. W. Craven. A special prize, awarded by Dr. E. H. B. Milson for the best surgical nurse in her third year, was won by Nurse Jon Davison, and one awarded by Mis* Nutsey for the highest marks gained in second year for practical ward work was won by Nurse Mavis Dreaver.

Those to receive State medals were: Nurse D. M. Abrahams, Nurse L. J. Astbury, Nur.se P. L. Barnee, Nurse Y. V. Beaumont, Nurse J. M. M. Bowles. Nurse F. M. Bremner, Nurse J. I. Corney, Nuree J. Davison, Nurse P. R. Graham. Nurse E. M. N. Harvie, Nurse M. J. Hewitt, Nurse «T, L. Horrocfca, Nurse K. E. Humphreys, Nurse N. King, Nuree S. I. King. N.uree ff. E. MoCullough, Nurse B. L. Ransom, Nurse B. F. Ross, Nurse J. Z. Saunders (honours), Nur«e I. M. Sinton, Nurse H. V. Walker, Nurse L. A. Wallace, Nuree A. E. Wilson, Nuree H. Woodcock, Nurse E. H. Goodison. Florence Nightingale Pledge. Tfie medals were pinned on the nurses' Uniforms by various gueste, Mise Nutsey handing them out in turn. At the conclusion of this ceremony the Florence Nightingale pledge was taken by the nursee.

Trpphiee for swimming and tennis were awarded to the following:—Watson Cup, to Nurse Orr (00 yards championehip); Nutsey Cup, to junior second year nurses (relay race); Nurse S. Clark (30 yards breaetstroke), Nurse Winstone (30 yards backstroke); Nurse K. White (diving); Nuree M. Macky (balloon novelty and bun race); Nurse P. Taylor (30 yards novice handicap); resident doctors (relay race against nuraing staff). Tennis; Mueller Cup, won by Nurse Withey; Henderson Shield, won by senior fourth y*ar nurses.

The special guests present were:— Mr. and Mre. Allan Moody, Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Craven, Dr. and Mre, J. Hardie Neil, Dr. and Mrs. Roland Wilson, Dr. and Mrs. E. L. Fitzgerald, Mrs. C. Grange, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Campbell, Mm. Alfred Kidd, Misses A. and M. Bagley, Mrs. Howitt, Dr. Kenneth MacCormick, Miss Hilma Moody, and Mr. E. H. Potter, Mr. J. H. Kinnear and Mr. .T. Sayegh, of the Auckland Hospital Board.
