REBEL POETS.
RATIONALIST ADDRESS.
•The Strand Theatre platform was occupied on Sunday evening by Mr. H, Ingram, who delivered an address under the auspices of the Auckland Rationalist Association on "Rationalist Poets." The field of literature, he declared, was studded with rationalist poets of high calibre, who were all intellectual rebels. Eight centuries ago Omar Khayyam (the Persian poet-astronomer) voiced his .protest against orthodoxy. Fitzgerald's translation of Omar's "Rubaiyet" had gone round the world. Omar, at an age when religious beliefs were crystallised, scoffed at immortality. Coming down to a later period, we find Shelley ahd Byron permeated with rebellious views. Shelley paid the penalty by being expelled from Oxford for hie* iconoclastic utterances. We had two famous poet rebels in Morris and Henley. These two had delivered messages of clarity and used their great gifts in an attempt to make the world believe in realities.
