FIRST MOVE.

ON THE HUSTINGS.

LABOUR SPEAKERS TO-NIGHT.

ROLLS CLOSE ON THURSDAY.

First move in the intensive general election campaigning expected of candidates between now and.. Saturday, October 15, will be made to-night, with the opening addresses of two New Zealand Labour party candidates from suburban platforms.

The speakers will be Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P. for Grey Lynn and Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing, who will open his campaign in the Grev Lynn Library hall; and Mrs. M. M.'Drc'aver, Labour candidate for Reniuera, who will give her address in the Green Lane Theatre. Both meetings will, start at eight o'clock.

Since sitting members are now free from Parliamentary duties, these meetings will herald the beginning of a month of increasing activity. It will not be long before the night "air is thick with the promises, the claims, the coun-ter-claims and the criticisms, hurled from the platforms and towards them, that. characterise pre-election weeks in every democratic country.-

Little time remains in which electors may make sure that they are on the rolls and so have the right to record their votes. They will have a last opportunity to do this on Thursday, for that is the day on which the election writs are to he issued. The supplementary rolls will close at six o'clock on Thursday evening.

Enrolment is compulsory for every person of 21 years or over, "and the onus is on the elector to make sure that he or she is registered. Electors are advised to call at the registrar's office in High Street and inspect the rolls for themselves; although every precaution is taken, the possibility that registrations sent in by mail or by other means may have gone astray Bhould not be overlooked. •

While electors are thus playing their part, candidates have been mapping out their campaign programmes, arranging meeting dates, massing facts and statistics and booking halls. It is expected that the end of this week will see the campaign fully under way.'
