POWERFUL ENGINES.
AWANUI HEARS COMPLETION.
TRIAL RUNS THIS MONTH.
Approaching completion at the Nelson Street wharf is the A. «T. Frankham Shipping Company's motor vessel Awanui. formerly the Northern Steamship Company's Daphne, which has undergone extensive overhaul and refitting during the past two years. It is anticipated, that the vessel, which has been practically rebuilt, will be ready to take her trials at the end of this month.
The Daphne was formerly steamdriven. and she was engaged on coastal runs. The old engines have been replaced by powerful Fairbanks-Morse Diesel engines developing 240 h.p., and it is anticipated that the vessel will have a fair turn of speed. Fitting and tuning the engines is occupying the attention of the engineers at the present time.
In the refitting the vessel was stripped practically to the hull. New deck beams and a new deck were fitted, with greater accommodation for cargo. A mast will later be stepped, and winches and gear for the handling of cargo. A large part of the deck space aft is occupied by substantially constructed mess, galley and cabin accommodation.
With its fine sweep of bows and powerful appearance, the Awanui should prove a handsome addition to Auckland's fleet of coastal vessels.
