ON WAY TO RECORD.
CHRISTCHURCH RAINFALL TOTAL NOW OVER AVERAGE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A normal year's rain has fallen in the first eight months and five days of 1938. The total rainfall so far this year is 20.28 in. The average over a long period in Christchurch is 25.24 in. This year is following closely in the steps of 1936, when record figures were established. In 1936 the rainfall reached the phenomenal total of 36.14 in, and there is every likelihood that 1938 will, if normal rainfall occurs in the remaining four months, finish not far behind the record of two years ago. The soil has become thoroughly saturated in most suburbs of the city, and in some of the outer areas water has lain for many weeks on the surface. A comparison of the falls over the last eight years is provided in the following totals of rainfall to September 5 in each year since 1930, supplied bv the Magnetic Observatory: 1930 17.03 1931 13.07 1932 11.97 1933 11.65 1934 20.95 1985 .. . 13.99 1936 26.17 - I*7 16.65 3038 2UB
