WITHOUT PERMIT.
WRESTLING CONTEST. POLICE PROSECUTION. TOURNAMENT AT MILLS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. John Fraser, chairman of the Whakatane Paper Mills Athletic Committee, appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of conducting a wrestling contest without a permit. Constable Cummings said that on August 2 a boxing and wrestling tournament was held at the mills. No charge was made at the door, and contributions were only voluntary. Amateur contests had been held at the mill for about two years and the proceeds went to buy mats and other equipment for the men working on the job. There was no personal gain, and he would not press for a heavy penalty.
The defendant stated that he was unaware of an offence being committed. There had been no monetary gain to anyone, ancT the funds from contributions were used merely to provide equipment for the boys. g
The constable said the bouts were well conducted, and no harm was being done. The magistrate advised the defendant to secure a permit and ordered him to pay 10/ costs.
