SURPRISES IN HURDLES

CURIE WINS.

ECSTATIC PLEASED.

ANOTHER TO ANNOYER.

WANGANUI RESULTS.

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.")

WAXGAXUI, this day.

The weather conditions were anything but favourable when the Wanganui Jockey Club opened its spring meeting to-day. It was raining steadily, much to the inconvenience of sporting enthusiasts, who attended in large numbers. The track was in good order. Led All the Way. Annoyer was always in front in the Hunters' Steeplechase and beat the favourite Salon, easily at the finish. Entering on the last round he and Ruenzori were together, with Salon, Kikiroki and Power Chief next. Annoyer was about three lengths clear of Salon at the home turn with Kikiroki and Ruenzori following. Once over the last obstacle Annoyer went on to beat Salon by six lengths, with Ruenzori a similar distance back. Kikiroki was fourth and Power Chief next. Speculators Pleased. Ecstatic, favourite for the Maiden Race, jumped smartly and led all the way. She was followed across the top by"All" Bunsby, Minga, Fiancee, Night Attack, and Old Bill, and there was little change turning for home. Ecstatic went on to win comfortably by two lengths and a half from Minga, while Fiancee linished fast to get third, half a length further back. All Bunsby, Old Bill and Maiwai were next. Good Dividends. Curie, after being handily placed throughout, took charge before the straight was reached in the Okehu Hurdles and won easily, returning a very nice price. Aiguille, second, also paid a good dividend. Erebus led through the straight from Ambition, Paul Robeson, Mangukaha, Curie and Begorrah, but at the fence entering the back stretch he nearly came down. His jockey made a great recovery, but not before Erebus had interfered with several others behind him. Mangukaha then went on in front and was in charge across the top from Paul Robeson, Curie and Red Rufus, with Taillight heading the others. Curie ran up fast and was clear entering the straight from Paul Robeson, Mangukaha, 1 Red Rufus and Aiguille. Curie beat Aiguille by four lengths, with Aurora's Love, who finished on, a length away. Mangukaha and Paul Robeson followed. Results:— HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE of £120. About two miles. 2—ANNOYER. 9.10— J. P. Fergus 1 I—SALON, 10.1 ..*> S—RUENZORI. 10.4 All started. Six lengths each way.
