"HAS ITS CLAWS IN."
INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH.
MR. COATES' CRITICtSM. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Seporter.) WELLINGTON*, this day. "This Department has its claws into everything. It is taking over all manner of duties from other departments and once it does that it is the end of them." remarked Mr. Coates (National, Kaipara) in the House of Representatives yesterday in general criticism of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the vote for which was under discussion. "What has the Department done?" he asked. Mr. F. W. Schramm (Government, East): What did you set it up fort Mr. Coates: This Department was set up with an entirely different organisation from what it has to-day. i The Department had previously been administered with a sympathetic touch and in a practical manner, said Mr. j Coates. The Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr. Sullivan: Everybody knows that the Rt. Hon. gentleman is ahimated J by a personal vendetta against the head of the Department. Mr. Coates: I am going to tell the country that I have no vendetta against him. As a matter of fact he is a friend of mine, but eveu so I am not afraid to put a bomb under him and make him get going. What we want is results. I say again that I have no vendetta . against the head of the Department. j Mr. Sullivan: I reassert that. | i Mr. Coates: That does not matter two t pence. With all the scientists in the j Department they stiould at least be able ' 'to tell us what they have achieved. i
