FOUR FIGURES AT LAST. HOLMES WINS TOSS BUT SENDS AUSTRALIA IN. TACTICS DO NOT SUCCEED. 11 a.m.) LOXDOX, August 11. After rain had prevented any play on the opening day of *ie Surrey v. Australia cricket match, a start was made at 2.15 this afternoon.
As the Oval wicket is notorious for bad behaviour when sunshine follows rain, it was not surprising that E. R. T. Holmes (captain of M.C.C. in Xew Zealand, 103536), on winning the toss from McCabe, sent Australia in to bat.
The wicket, however, played well, and at stumps the visitors had 204 on the board for four wickets.
When lie had made nine runs Fingleton reached his long-delayed 1000 for the tour. With a thunderstorm brewing, bad light
stopped play at five minutes to six (35 minutes before the usual time of drawing stumps). Scores:— AUSTRALIA.—First Innings. .
