RODE IN THE 'SIXTIES.
Last Monday week was- the ninetieth birthday of Denis Fountain (says a Melbourne writer). Outeide of this sportsman I don't think there is a living man who was connected with the Australian turf in the 'sixties—certainly not as a jockey. He rode in the third, fourth and fifth Melbourne Cups, being second in one. Mr. Fountain also rode in the first three Adelaide Cups, winning in 1865 on Ebor. Fountain resides in Glenhuntly. In April last he and Mrs. Fountain celebrated the sixty-eighth anniversary of their wedding. As a youth Fountain was associated with the late James Wilson, sen., for whom he looked after the famous mare Musidora. It was for Witeon. sen., that he won the Adelaide Cup on Ebor. Mr. Fountain became a trainer, horse owner, and later a bookmaker. He was a close personal friend of the great cross-country jockey Tom Corrigan, and worked betting commissions on Corrigan's behalf. Corrigan rode for him in a steeplechase at Randwick in which trouble arose through Corrigan and another jockey turning into the straight and finishing while there yet wa» another round of the course to negotiate.
