RESTRICTION.
GRAPEFRUIT TRADE.
SMALLER IMPORTATIONS.
DECISION OF GOVERNMENT.
TAURANGA, this day. Restrictions on Californian grapefruit into New Zealand are proposed by the Government, according to information received by the Tauranga Citrus Association from the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash. The Internal Marketing Department is refraining from ordering grapefruit by the next overseas vessel, in the hope that the New Zealand variety will find a more ready market. The position will be closely watched and encouragement given for selling the local fruit.
"It is doubtful whether we should absolutely exclude the imported Californian article, but merely considerably restrict the quantity," says the Minister
That there is a definite demand for Californian grapefruit, which could not be substituted by the use of the New Zealand product is evident from the fact that there is a duty of over 7/6 a case on the imported line, the Minister adds. The prices range in the vicinity of 32/ to 35/, while New Zealand grapefruit sells in the vicinity of 8/ to 10/ a case. •
