PARLIAMENT.
DAY'S HIGH LIGHTS. MR. FORBES* ATTACK. GOVERNMENT TAKES NOTICE. MAORI ORATORY ENTERTAINS (I!y Telegra ph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Tlio Budget debate received a renewed lo;i>e of life yesterday when Mr. G. W. Forbes (National, Hurunui) made a critical attack on the huge expenditure revealed in the Financial Statement, and his remarks caused more interest in Government circles than some of the preceding attacks. Mr. Forbes said he was amazed at the {spontaneous uprising of people throughout New Zealand in opposition to the Government. They knew that a day of reckoning was at hand and that a small country like New Zealand could not go on with reckless, expenditure without Buffering the inevitable consequences. This is the second occasion this session thnt Mr. Forbes has taken a leading part in placing the Opposition'* point of view before the house.
In a thoughtful speech concerning land development and what should be done to assist the man on the land, Mr. C. H. Burnett (Government, Tauranga) was also listened to attentively, while Mr. 11. R. Herring (Government, Mid Canterbury), by the aid of a diagram, illustrated the points he made concerning taxation, and argued that although taxes were higher the burden that the people had to carry now was less than in former years because of higher incomes all round. Crowded galleries in the evening listened to a fine piece of oratory by Si* Apirana Ngata (National, Eastern lliiori) concerning the native race. The last speaker was the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Semple, who gave a recitation of the work of the Government during the last two and a half years, with special reference to transport, public works and unemployment. It was only in the last few minutes of his speech that the Minister indulged in his usual colourful style when he heatedly condemned the reported utterances of a woman supporter of the National party
