After a three weeks' cruise of more than 5000 miles to the Society Islands, Samoa and Tonga with a party -of 250 tourists, the Maunganui returned to Auckland this morning and berthed at Prince's wharf shortly affreight o'clock. Fine weather was experienced throughout the trip until shortly after midnight on Wednesday, when the vessel was approaching the New Zealand coast. By. two olcloek on Thursday morning the Maunganui was Jeeling the full effect of a north-westerly gale with heavy seas running. So heavily did the waves pound the vessel that two cabin portholes were stove in, but ho other damage was done. After blowing hard for about four hours tiki-- wind abated and the sea became less rough, but a few of the lesß hardy passengers suffered from seasickness at ; the height of the blow '.
The Maunganui brought down as cargo about 300 cases of bananas from Tonga. The only passenger picked up on the Islands trip was Mr. H. Shepherd, who I joined *3ie*hsp at Apia. -
