LENIENCY ABUSED.
WOMAN - GIVEN LAST CHANCE
While admitting that she had not taken advantage of leniency previously extended to her, Mr. Aekins, in the, Police Court to-day, appealed for a further chance for Dorothy Devlin, a married woman, presented for sentence on a charge of obtaining £8 by" false pretences. . Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., said he had given some consideration to the case since accused had been remanded in custody last Thursday. "This is her third offence of this nature after two opportunities of making good have been, given to her," he said. "It is really a case for imprisonment. I fear she has been taking advantage of the fact that probation has twice been previously extended, and that she thought if she was found out again the offence would be overlooked. But that is quite wrong. [I «m prepared to give her one more chance, and am going to impose a suspended sentence." I Mrs. Devlin was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on October 10. "If she does not conduct herself properly, and if there is any further offence, she will be sentenced to a term of imprisonment," the magistrate added. "Now it rests with herself." . No order for restitution was made, the magistrate stating that he "would consider the matter again when the woman appeared for sentence. j. ■ . Knocked down by a car on the Wh*ngarei -.Dargavilie highway at Maungatapere this morning, Peter Thais, * Maori, was admitted to the I Whangarei District Hospital, suffering from a cut on the right leg and injuries to the chest.
