GOOD MANNERS.

UNIVERSITY'S NEED.

HEIRESS OFFERS £25,000.

TREATHEHT OF BEQUEST.

(Special.—By Air Mail.) _ LOXDOX, June 24.

An offer of £25.000 was made to Leeds University to found a Chair of IGood Manners there.

It is the latest development in the longstanding controversy between the University and Mrs. McGrigor Phillips, niece and heirese of Lord Brotherton, the University's millionaire benefactor.

Mrs. Phillips, better known a» Dorothy Una Ratcliffe, the authoress, explained, why she had made the offer.

She felt that after the way the University authorities had treated the late Lord Brotherton's bequest of his famous collection of books, they needed such a chair more than anybody elt-e.

"I am quite serious about the offer," she added. "I made it in writing, but beyond a reply from the registrar that my letter ).ad been received'and was being considered, I have heard nothing.

"The only conditions are that I shall be able to appoint the man or woman who is to occupy the chair."

Mrs. Phillips complains that instead of settingaside th'- interest of thewhole |of Lord Brotherton'e £100.(KX) legacv to ithe University for the purpose of safeguarding the collection, tbev agreed lo ! utilise only the interest on" £35.000 of |that su.n. and that they ha.l -ilaf-ed an {unworthy pla<jue of her unde in jLe I University.
