STATE HOUSES.
QUESTION OF COST. STATEMENT BY UK. J. A. LEE. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing. Mr. J. A. Lee, in reply to remarks by a Wellington architect in regard to the alleged high cost of State houses, tlenies that it was stated at a meeting between architects and heads of the State Housing Department two years ago that the Government's four-roomed houses would cost £390 each. Mr. Lee said that a statement had also been made that a house of 800 square feet would cost £1100. Xo house of that size built in any part of the Dominion had cost anything like that amount.
Mr. Lee added that a regrettable feature was an attack on the staff of the Department. The staff of the Housing Department had been working under high pressure, and officers had been drawn away by oilers of higher pay by private architects.
