TEAM CHANGES.

ENGLAND'S TEST HOPES. In this selection Smailes Goddard, Gibb and Nichola replace Wellard, Farnew, Ames and Sinfield, who were included in the thirteen players selected for the second Test. T. F. Smailes, who is 28 years of age, took a total of 14 wickets for 103 runs while playing for Yorkshire against Glamorgan on June 25, and took eix tor 92 agarnet the Australians on Saturday. P. A. Gibb has played for Cambridge University, Yorkshire and Scotland. He has been prominent in county matches recently for consistently high scoring, making a double-century for Cambridge against Free Foresters on June 14, and 76 against M.C'.C. on July 1. His average up to June 19 was 61.64.

Nichols took a total of 11 wickets for 75 runs playing for Essex against Gloucester on July 1. Smailes, Goddard and Nichols were not included in a list of leading bowlers' averages cabled on June 19.

Thomas William Goddard, the Gloucester slow bowler, was rated by "Wisden" last season first of the five players of the year for 1937. Originally a fast bowler, he changed his style in 1928 after using it for six seasons, as, although good. he was not considered up to standard. Last year he took 248 wickets, more than anyone else during the season. Bowling round the wicket, with three or more fieldsmen at short leg, Goddard is a problem to batsmen when the pitch is responsive to spin, while he is also able to turn the ball a little even on the best of wickets. His skill in flighting the ball is also an important asset; his height—he stands 6ft 3in—makes the flight steep and difficulty to judge. Last season he took all ten 'wickets for 113 runs against Worcestershire. Goddard toured South Africa with the M.C.C. in l f 3o-31, but owing to an injurv did not fieure in any of the Tests. Against Australia at Manchester in 1930 he took two wickets for 49 runs, while his six for 29 in New Zealand's second innings at Old Trafford last July largely decided the »*"«<.' in England'* favour.
